I am researching the Webb family of Blaina, originally of Forest of
Dean. I have them on an 1881 census and 1891 census but I need the
information off the 1871 census.
George Webb, head of household Eliza, wife Some of the children are
George, Fred, Lewis, Dinah, Fanny, Amy and Jane and possibly another
Eliza.
My connection is to the child Dinah, she being my great-grandmother.
Hi Melissa,
I see that Kate has provided you with information on your WEBB family from
the 1871 census index concerning Aberystruth - Blaina.
As you may remember, from our correspondence in June 2000, my slight link
to your WEBB family is through the marriage of your great-grandmother's
sister, Fanny WEBB, to Thomas VEATER, the great-nephew of my 3x
great-grandfather, Jonathan VEATER.
Here's what I have on Thomas VEATER and Fanny VEATER (nee WEBB).
Thomas VEATER was the son of Thomas VEATER and Mary VEATER (nee WILLIAMS).
He was born in Blaina, Monmouthshire c.1850.
At the time of the 1861 census, Thomas VEATER was 11 years old and living
in the household of his parents in Blaina.
In 1871, he was recorded as being 20 years old and still with his parents
in Blaina. Census reference 5317 81 45.
Thomas VEATER and Fanny WEBB were married in Bethel Baptist Chapel Blaina,
on 16th. February 1884. The surname of Thomas was spelt VATER on the
marriage certificate. Fanny's brother, Lewis and mother, Eliza, were in
attendance at the wedding. (Thomas may have been married before his
marriage to Fanny Webb, but here is no information on a previous wife or
children.)
In 1891, he was living at 131 High Street, Blaina. His age on the census of
that year was recorded as 39 and his occupation was given as fitter. His
birthplace was Blaina, Monmouthshire. Fanny VEATER (nee WEBB), the wife of
Thomas, was 26 and born in Cinderford, Gloucestershire. Their sons were
Lewis, who was three and a half, and Wilfred Llewellyn, who was one and a
half. Both sons were born in Blaina.
Also in the household was George WEBB, the father-in-law of Thomas. He was
a 66-year-old widower and annuitant who was blind. His birthplace was
recorded as Herefordshire. Further research has shown this to be Weston
under Penyard, Herefordshire.
Thomas and Fanny had a number of children. Besides the two above, they had
Maryann, Elsie May, Mary Ellen, Doris, Stanley, Frederick James, Phoebe and
Gladys Lillian. There were two other sons whose names are unknown.
I have a note that Thomas and Fanny emigrated to the U.S.A. with some of
their children in 1904 aboard the S.S. Freeman. However, according to the
1930 U.S. census, on which Fanny appears as Francis (sic) VEATER, aged 63,
in the household of her daughter Elsie, the date of Fanny's immigration to
the U.S. was 1915. Elsie BALLIET (nee VEATER) was recorded in the 1930 U.S.
census as having immigrated in 1904.
