Here is a MAYO / THORNE / BOON Family Group which lived principally in
Monmouthshire. I hope that this material will be of use to some of you MAYO
researchers out there.
Henry Charles MAYO was born in Broadwey in Q4 of 1850; bp. there on
December 8th., 1850. On April 30th., 1870, in Weymouth district, Henry
married (1) Charlotte Jane THORNE in Sutton, Dorset, and they had two sons.
For the 1871 census in Broadwey, Henry 20 was a sawyer, living with
Charlotte J. 21 and Frederick, 1 month. Henry was, later, a railways man.
Charlotte died in Weymouth district in Q1 of 1874. On November 16th., 1874,
in Newport district, Monmouthshire, Henry married (2) Martha BOON. Henry
and Martha lived in Bassalleg, Monmouthshire. In 1881, Henry 31, a railway
switchman, and family were living in Pye Corner, Rogerstone, Monmouthshire;
in 1891, Henry 41 and family resided at Rogerstone, Monmouthshire; Henry 60
was in Newport, Monmouthshire, for the 1911 census. Martha died in South
Wales, near Cardiff, aged 74 in 1934; Henry, aged 86, died in 1936.
Henry Charles MAYO and Charlotte had two sons:
1. Frederick William MAYO, born in Q1 of 1871 in Broadwey, bp. there on
April 9th., 1871. In Q4 of 1897, in Newport, he married Sarah Ann MEAKER,
who had been born in Newport, Monmouthshire, c 1872. At the 1901 census,
Frederick 30 was a railway engine driver, living in Trowbridge, Wilts, with
wife, Sarah 29 and son, Henry 1. By the 1911 census, this family was living
in Wrexham Regis, Denbighshire, Wales. Frederick and Sarah had issue.
2. Thomas James Thorne Mayo, born in Q2 of 1873, in Wigan, Lancashire. On
May 27th., 1901, in Bassalleg, Thomas James Thorne MAYO married Amelia
BOLTON. Did they have any children?
Henry Charles Mayo and Martha had issue:
3. Beatrice Mary MAYO, born in Basselleg, Monmouthshire about 1878; birth
registered in Newport in Q3 of 1878. Beatrice married James John T. GOODE
and they had three known children, all born in Newport, M. At the 1901
census, James was a railway ticket collector, living in Newport. This
family later moved to Cardiff.
4. Alfred John MAYO, born in Basselleg, Monmouthshire, about Q4 of 1882.
Alfred John was also a railwayman. On June 8th., 1908, Alfred married
Susannah POOLER, in Cardiff. He served in WW1, ending as a sergeant; he
then worked for the Council in Cardiff. Alfred died in Cardiff in 1946 and
Susannah in Cardiff in 1965. They had issue.
5. Ernest Alexander MAYO, born in Basselleg, Monmouthshire, about 1886,
birth registered in Newport in Q1 of 1886. Ernest married Mabel WATKINS in
1915. Ernest and Mabel lived in Newport, Gwent, Wales, where they had four
known children. Ernest died in 1967, aged 81, and Mabel has also passed
away. They had issue.
6. Sydney Ivor MAYO, born in Basselleg, Monmouthshire, about 1889, birth
registered in Newport in Q4 of 1889. During the First World War, he married
Maud CHIVERS. Sydney was killed in the war; no issue.
The MAYO ancestors of this family came from Frome St. Quintin, Dorset, back
in the 1600s and 1700s.
