Here is a MAYO family group, who lived in Broadwey, Dorset. I hope this
material is useful to some of you, out there.
John MAYO was baptized in Frome Vauchurch, Dorset, in 1828. John was a
sawyer. He married Elizabeth WINZAR, in Broadwey, Dorset, in 1847. At the
1851 census for Broadwey, John 23, agricultural labourer, was living with
wife, Elizabeth 22. In 1859, John was a carpenter. John and Elizabeth were
enumerated in Broadwey for the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses; in the 1891
census for Broadwey, John 62 was a contractor, living with Elizabeth 61,
laundress, and daughter, Rosa J. 23, laundress. John Mayo 68 was buried in
Broadwey, St. Nicholas, in 1896; Elizabeth Mayo 71 was buried in Broadwey,
St. Nicholas, in 1900. John and Elizabeth had issue:
1. Alfred John MAYO, born in Weymouth, in 1849, bp. in Melcombe Regis,
Dorset, in 1849. In Q2 of 1873, in Lewisham district, Alfred married Sarah
CLARKE. In 1881 census for Cote House, Westbury on Trym, Glos., Alfred MAYO
34, married, was a butler in charge of house. An Alfred 51 died in
Bradford, Yorks, about Q3 of 1900. Alfred and Sarah had issue.
2. Henry Charles MAYO, born in Broadwey in 1850; bp. there in 1850. On
April 30th., 1870, in Weymouth district, Henry married (1) Charlotte Jane
THORNE in Sutton, Dorset, and they had two sons. For the 1871 census in
Broadwey, Henry 20 was a sawyer. Henry was, later, a railways man.
Charlotte died in Weymouth district in 1874. On November 16th., 1874, in
Newport district, Monmouthshire, Henry married (2) Martha BOON; Henry and
Martha lived in Bassalleg, Monmouthshire. In 1881, Henry 31, a railway
switchman, and family were living in Pye Corner, Rogerstone, Monmouthshire.
In 1891, Henry 41 and family resided at Rogerstone, Monmouthshire. Henry 60
was in Newport, Monmouthshire, for the 1911 census. Martha died in South
Wales, near Cardiff, aged 74 in 1934; Henry, aged 86, died in 1936. Henry
and his two wives had issue.
3. John Francis MAYO, born in Broadwey in 1852; bp. in Broadwey on
November 7th., 1852. In the 1871 census, John 18, unmarried, was a
labourer, living in Broadwey with his parents; cannot locate in 1881
census.
4. Alexander MAYO, born in Broadwey, Dorset, about 1856; bp. there in
1856. Alexander 14, was a blacksmith, living with his parents in Broadwey,
for the 1871 census. In 1880, in Wigan district, Alexander Mayo married
Alice ARSTALL. At the 1881 and the 1891 censuses, Alexander was a Police
Constable in Bradford, Yorkshire. Alexander 44 died in Bradford in Q3 of
1900; Alice 64 died there in Q1 of 1921. Alexander and Alice had issue.
5. Herbert MAYO, born in Broadwey about 1859, baptized in Broadwey in
1859. In 1877, in Weymouth district, Herbert MAYO married Emma SATCHELL.
By the 1891 census, in Bedminster, Bristol, Somerset, Herbert 32 was a
signalman in GWR, living with Emma and Rosa K. 13. Herbert and Emma had
issue.
6. Albert MAYO, born in Broadwey in 1862. Albert 20, single, a
Metropolitan Police Constable, lived in Paddingon, London, for the census of
1881. In 1886, in Newport, Monmouthshire, he married Mary EDWARDS. By the
1891 census, they resided at St. Woollos, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales,
where Albert 28 was a signalman in GWR; by the 1901 census, Albert 38 and
family were in Newport, Monmouthshire, where Albert was a stableman. Albert
and Mary had issue.
7. Rosa Jane MAYO, born in Broadwey in 1868. In 1898 in Weymouth
district, Rosa Jane married George William TIZARD. At the 1901 census,
George and Rosa lived in Melcombe Regis, where George was a hairdresser.
George and Rosa had issue.
This family descended from MAYO ancestors who lived in Frome St. Quintin,
Dorset, in the 1600s and 1700s.
