An 1851 birth certificate shows Jenkin Jones born at Graigddu Trevethin.
Graigddu was part of the old Trevethin parish area. I understand Graigddu
means "black rock" and while there were farms there back then it is mostly a
rock quarry now. I have looked at maps of the Trevethin area and can not
find a place with the name Graigddu. Can someone tell me what it is called
on a map?

Dear Alan,
Graig Ddu is roughly 1¼ miles west of the village of Trevethin on the
opposite (west) side of the valley.
Graig Ddu is at grid reference SO256018 on modern UK Ordnance Survey
1;50,000-scale "Landranger" and 1;25,000-scale "Explorer" maps.
You can see the relevant 2-kilometre square section of the Explorer map at
the Get-A-Map website
http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/frames.htm
In the search section near the top left of the Get-A-Map webpage, enter
SO256018 into the search field and click the GO button. The initial map to
appear will be a 2 km x 2 km section of the 1:25,000 scale 'Explorer' map
centred on Graig Ddu.
You can zoom out and change to successively smaller scale maps by clicking
on the zoom control buttons to the middle left of the map.
You can call up a highly detailed (1:10,560-scale) late 19th century map of
this area by going to the Old Maps website at
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
On the main page, select the "Co-ordinates" option in the search facility
(near top left of the page). In the search field enter the co-ordinates
325600,201800 (without any spaces) and click the Search button.
When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarged view" button below the
map. A highly detailed large map of the area will open in a new window,
centred on Graig Ddu.
You can save the enlarged view map to your hard disc by clicking on the map
with your right mouse button and selecting the "Save Picture As..." option
in the menu which appears.
Note that the Old Maps website is currently (10.00 BST on Sat 31 July)
off-line for maintenance but will be back on-line shortly.
Kind regards,
John
