Many thanks for your reply Ron. I have seen both these definitions but
neither seem to fit. He was married in Tredegar, where his occupation was
given as "Lander". He was born and had previously lived in Devon and was, I
expect, a labourer. I am trying to find out how he came to be in Tredegar,
and thought the occupation may be something to do with the Iron Works there.

Can't find it in our book of Old Occupations but I can find:
LANDSMAN, A seaman on his first voyage.
I think that this may have had a more common translation into Lander.
Did he by any chance live near the sea?
LARDNER, The keeper of the cupboard.
This could also apply if there was a transcription error
Could it have been one of these.
