Someone asked several weeks ago for information about the cemetery at
Abergavenny Asylum. Through the kindness of Len and Isla Hough I can now
give further information. this is what they say:
When we were in Abergavenny this morning, delivering the journal to
Neil at B&N, we went into the Council One Stop Shop to ask about
Penyval cemetery. The clerk in the office did not know the answers
but made numerous phone calls to find out. She discovered that the
land at Penyval is now in the possession of the developer, Redrow, who
built a new housing estate there. However they have not disturbed the
cemetery, and it is still accesible, although it has not been cared
for and it would not be easy to locate a particular grave. The
cemetery is still protected by law, but eventually (possibly either 50
or 75 years after the last person was buried there) it will, I
imagine, be re-developed. The instructions they gave were these,
but, not knowing the roads there, they mean little to me: From the
Ross Road, go over the footbridge. Follow the path from that bridge to
the cemetery church, and the graveyard is directly behind the
church. It was suggested that visitors should wear wellington
boots. I hope that this will be of help. I think I told you that
the burial registers for Penyval are at Gwent Record Office, but I
don't know if there is a site plan anywhere to help to find a
particular grave.
I am sure that this will be of interest to several people and I have
thanked Len and Isla on our behalf for taking the time to find out.
