If my gt-grandfather is anything to go by he would have been recruited
much nearer to home than either of those places.
In 1879 gt-granddad enlisted in the Royal Artillery at Newport. Although
I'm no military historian I think it was the practise for most regiments
to send out recruiting parties, particularly to areas of high
unemployment, when they needed extra manpower. In the case of my
gt-grandfather he soon found himself on a ship bound for the Zulu war
which, thankfully, he survived.
