Hello Jon,
I checked for this John Powell (b. 1850, Herefordshire) in the 1851 and 1861
censuses. There seems to be only one match, and his birthplace is stated in
those censuses as Bridstow, Herefordshire (near Ross-on-Wye).
I've examined modern and early Ordnance Survey maps together with the tithe
map for Bridstow parish but unfortunately none of these shows a Graven
Common.
The
Common-land.com website fails to identify any 'Graven Common' in
Bridstow or in the neighbouring parish of Peterstow: see
https://common-land.com/lands/view/5923
Sorry I can't help, but if you can get access to the records of Bridstow
parish church you may find references to Graven Common in the registers of
baptisms, marriages and burials. If so, thisa would confirm it is/was in
Bridstow parish.
Kind regards,
John

Subject: [MON] Birthplace in 1871 Census
Hi listers,
Can anyone tell me what the birthplace is of Joseph Powell at the following
reference in the 1871 census please:
RG10 Piece 5319 Folio 44 Page 30
For those who don’t already know, I’m completely blind. A friend who is a
genealogist said it looks like Graven Common, Herefordshire, but Googling
that doesn’t bring up anything useful at all.
Sincerest thanks,
Jon
