Hello all,
My particular interest is in the family of William MATTHEWS, who
appeared on the 1841 census as follows:
HO107/0751/13/6
Goitre [which I read as Goitie!], St Mellons
William MATTHEWS | 35 | Farmer | Y [born in county]
Rachael MATTHEWS | 40 | | Y
Margaret MATTHEWS | 15 | | Y
William MATTHEWS | 12 | | Y
Edward MATTHEWS | 7 | | Y
John MATTHEWS | 4 | | Y
Catherine PRITCHARD [I had RICHARDS] | 11 | Ind | Y
From the 1861 census, where she is living with Edward's family as his
mother-in-law, I know that Rachael was William's second wife (at least)
and definitely not the mother of Margaret, William and Edward.
Catherine is (probably) her daughter from a previous marriage.
I can't find William (senior) in the 1851 or later censuses and I
haven't tried for Edward's siblings at this stage as MATTHEWS is quite
a common name. And I haven't found anything previous to 1841 as yet.
As you may have guessed, I'm descended from Edward.
This family has already been enquired about by Michael Cridland in
November 2003, and I tried to send him an e-mail off list, but his
e-mail address bounced, so if he or anyone else who knows more about
the family could contact me either on or off list, that would be great.
Regards,
Jo Thomas
