Thanks for stirring up my brain cells! Sometimes we have something right in
front of us and we overlook it. I just went and checked the witnesses on my
great-great-great grandparent's 1819 marriage record. I now think I have
another clue to follow. Thank you.

Yes, sorry, it began with civil registration in July 1837. Of course, there
was a chance that one of the witnesses recorded could have been the father,
but it doesn't mean that "father" was recorded on the records. It's
something we all wish had been done for many many years before 1837!
