I don't know whether this has been discussed already while I have been off the list,
if so please bear with me.
I see in the latest journal (78) that Gwent FHS proposes to put members' email
addresses with their interests on their web site.
Will there be any safeguard to prevent these being picked up by spammers' webcrawlers?
I am reluctant to change my email address yet again to escape the daily torrent of
unwanted offers which are the inevitable result of having it published in a direct
linkable entry on the web.

It has been under discussion for the last five years as far as I can
remember and yes a big part of that discussion has always been how to
minimise the chances of the addresses being harvested for use by s******s.
Until we can get ourselves a volunteer to take over as Webmaster I think the
website will continue to be maintained by our chairman and while he does an
excellent job we really do need someone to take over from him, preferably
someone who will have the time to work out how to put the members interests
onto the website in a way that is secure. More than this I can't tell you.

So there's no immediate plan then?
What I have done on my web site is to leave out the "@" which seems to work.
There are other schemes I think.

Hi Walter
There is a programme called E-Cloaker which encrypts Email addresses and
makes them safe from the Email address harvesting programmes you are
referring to.
I use it on my websites and find it very effective.
Best part is, it's free!
Regards,
Jon

Hi All,
To comply with data protection and to avoid unscrupulous use of e-mail
addresses by anyone, Glamorgan FHS only publishes the surnames interests & the
membership number of that person. Interested parties have to contact the members
interests secretary who will then pass on the enquiry to that particular
member, leaving the choice of whether to respond with contact details up to
them. It may not suit everyone in this age of "instant response" but it does
protect privacy of the society members.
Bye
