I would be grateful if someone with local knowledge of the area can enlighten me please!
I have a subscription to
Ancestry.com which I have spent many hours searching without
success.
For the 1871 census there are Districts 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8 for the Parish of Mynyddyslwyn.
Query - does this indicate there are missing images / records or were Districts 4, 5 and 6
simply in another Parish? Does anyone have knowledge of any missing images for this Parish
in the 1871 census?
I am unable to located records for the town/hamlet of Penmaen/Penmain in the 1871 census.
An extract from the National Gazetteer 1868 for the Parish of Mynyddyslwyn records
Penmain/Penmaen is in the Parish of Mynyddyslwyn, in the County of Monmouth. However the
Originsnetwork site records - GLAMORGAN 1871 CENSUS REGISTRATION DISTRICTS - IMPORTANT:
Piece number RG10/5463 which covered Registration Sub-District 2B, Gower Western,
(Porteynon, Penrice, Oxwich, Nicholaston, Penmaen, Reynoldston, Llandewy & Knelston)
is not included. The National Archives Catalogue at present (January 2005) does not show
this piece as being missing, although their hard copy of the Class List does.
Query - for the 1871 census was Penmaen in Monmouthshire or Glamorgan? Is this the same
place or were there two places named Penmaen? Are records for Penmaen 1871 census are
missing? If not which Parish and District would I find the records for Penmaen in?
I have located two families I am interested in and they are both in the Penmaen
Mynyddyslwyn area in the 1861 and 1881 census but I can not find either family in the 1871
census. Both families appear to have had children born around the time of the 1871 census
and this leads me to think the families did not move away from the district at the time of
the 1871 census.
With thanks for any assistance.
