Hi fellow Listers,
Thanks to Ann judith Jim and Keith for their suggestions.
As to Judiths thoughts about the Viaduct.
I tried that site but they can't find any mention of Benjamin working on it.
Ann Macy said she may have had some help at the birth of her children.
My guess is that as her parents were from Hampshire and her inlaws from
Somerset or Warwickshire... possibly Nuneaton area so may not have been
there when she had her children so I suspect she had a neighbour help
her out.
I did see she had a Couple of boarders staying there with them in 1861.
A Thomas LEWIS aged 40 a widow who was a Blacksmith from Monmouthshire and his son
Thomas LEWIS aged 12 a scholar from somewhere in Monmouthshire.
I can't deciphre the first bit. Could be Abercarn?
Jims story might be a possibility about working on the Canal as Benjamin seemed
to be a jack of all trades with the stories I've been told of what he did.
If you can build a tunnel or lay a concrete road even build a floating dry dock or a
Wool shed then a lot of different skills would be needed.
So thanks for that idea. I will follow it up.
Now to Keiths story. I liked that as the GENANZ List has had stories about people
travelling by sailing ships from UK to Australia. The hardship some of them had
to deal with both on board ship and once they got to Australia.
I was surprised that the Chinese were more inteligent when it came to that man
being able to purchase a train ticket back to either Higher or Lower Crumlin whereas
The UK people didn't know how he could purchase a one way ticket to China.
So thanks again for all your help on this one. Will keep you posted if I find
anything new out on this family line.
