I have a copy of 2 1861 census pages for Crumlin in Penmaen district of

RG 9 4026 71 page 15 or 16 Benjamin REEVES
We have tried to decipher where in Crumlin they are. All it states on the
two pages my family are on is Crumlin so I tried looking at pages either
side to pin point an area but my dyslexic brain couldn't figure it out.

Dear Kathy,
The properties enumerated adjacent to 'Crumlin' in the 1861 census are as
follows:
Crumlin Tollgate
Railway House
Crumlin (several entries)
Bottom of the Jenny(?)
Llanerch Isaf
The above entries are all in District 4 of the Mynyddyslwyn census district.
District 4 is described as follows:
"All that part of the Parish of Mynyddyslwyn which lies to the north of the
Parish road leading from Crumlin to Waterloo and thence to the Bridge
including part of Crumlin, Trinant, Tontyrbele, part of Crosspenmain,
Gurhay, Courtybella and Cwmcarrwg."
If you visit the Old-Maps website (
www.old-maps.co.uk/) and enter the
coordinates 321165,199249 into the search field, you'll be presented with an
old map of the area north of Crumlin on which you'll see Llanerch Isaf,
Tri-nant, and Ton-tir-bel.
The modern map on the Get-A-Map website shows Croespenmaen (Crosspenmain) to
be just west of Crumlin, off the B4254. Cwm-corrwg and Gwrhay are at grid
reference ST182996, just north of Oakdale. Get-A-Map is at
http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm
It seems from an analysis of the above that your REEVES family were probably
living in the northwest sector of Crumlin village but with no specific
address recorded.
Kind regards,
John
