Hi fellow listers,
Thanks to Keith, John, John Ball and Jane for their help.
I will have to get my map expert to check John Balls info out for me.
Looks like Benjamin REEVES and his family were living in a part of Crumlin that
seems to be in a non descript unnamed area of that 1861 census.
So back to square one.
What would a person who has been an Excavator about 1845 also a Contractor / Journeyman
and in Crumlin 1861 census a Carpenter be doing by way of work there?
I'm stumped as to why Benjamin decided to cart his family over to Crumlin. There is
a 10 year
gap between census's so he could have gone any where between the 1851 census in
Gloucester City
and turning up in Crumlin for the 1861 census.
Has anybody got any clues as to what sort of work would have drawn Benjamin to head over
to Crumlin with his family to work?
I thought he might have been working on the Viaduct that spanned Crumlin.
Sent a query of to the person who handles that URL and he can't find any mention of
him.
He was said to have built a railway line out of Wellington NZ as well as a Tunnel for
the
trains to pass through. Even put in a fell line up over the Rimutakas which is a steep
hill / incline just out of Wellington here in NZ.
Originally we think he was bought to Wellington to build a Patent slip (dry dock) for
the
local Council in charge of the waterfront at Evans Bay.
Due to his engineering skills there is a unique Wool shed still standing today in a
museum
here which he put together for his son Joseph (a wool farmer).
Joseph was his last child that had been born in Crumlin before coming to NZ.
I had a chance to see it and the museum staff said the way he constructed the steel
frames
to hold the shed together was most unusual.
Now that leads me to another question. If you were born in Crumlin back in 1860 would
it
have been a home birth.
When did ladies start going to hospital to have their children born in preference to a
Midwife calling to your home.
Any new clues most welcome. As I'm on Digest mode I will thank each and every one
in advance.
