I first encountered Edward EVANS on the April 1851 marriage
certificate of his
son Thomas and Ann CROFT. His occupation was listed as "farmer." I
suspect that he was an iron worker.
Edward, a widower, married Hannah JARRET, a widow, on 23 September
1816 at Risca, Monmouthshire (recorded in the 1813/1837 Monmouthshire
Marriage Index and in the Bishops Transcripts.) At the time of their
marriage, they were both residents of Risca. They both were born in
1786. Edward died and was buried at Risca, Monmouth, on 30 October
1840. At the time of the 1841 Census of the Parish of Risca, Hannah
was living with her children William, Edward, and Hannah.
Their children (all born in Risca) were:
William, b. 25 November 1816
Ann, b. 19 July 1819
Thomas, b. 11 July 1821
Jane, b. 11 May 1823
Hannah, b. 23 July 1825
Thomas, b. 5 August 1827--my great-grandfather
Edward, Jr., b. 5 May 1830
Hannah, b. 13 March 1833
It is quite possible that Edward was not born in Monmouthshire.
Hannah's maiden name was COSLET. I have no record of her marriage to
JARRET.
In the 1851 Census of Bedwellty, Monmouth, Thomas EVANS, age
23, lived with his brother (stepbrother) James JARRET, age 37, his wife
Mary, age 29, daughter Elizabeth, age 9, and twin sons John and James,
age 6. Therefore, Hannah's prior husband must have died about 1814.
In the 1851 Census of Risca, Monmouth, Hannah EVANS, age 63,
lived with her daughter Ann, age31. Ann had married William COOMER,
age31, a collier; they had a son James, age 7, and a daughter Mary, age
5. They lived in the Gate House, Risca.
If you have or encounter any information about Edward, Hannah, or
any of the above persons, I shall greatly appreciate hearing from you.
