Hi Lynn
Have you ordered Emma's death certificate - it should have
parent's names.
Unfortunately, after 20 years of marriage, when her husband registered her
death, he put her parents "unknown", birthplace England. Not a great help
!! I have even checked a few of the children's birth certificates for a more
detailed birthplace, but they are all the same so far.
I am thinking about getting the microfilm of the 1841 Census for Chepstow,
and having a browse through, but I am put off because I don't know how big
Chepstow was. There were at least three schools listed in the Pigots/Kellys
about that time.

Hi Diane
There seems to have been a Lewis family in Chepstow for quite some time
according to my book by Ivor Waters called Chepstow Parish Records and, as
you say, no Smiths. A couple of thoughts - Could Smith be her stepfather's
name? Perhaps she was staying with grandparents/uncles and from what I can
see of the Lewis' in Chepstow, while not gentry, they were rather
prominent in the town. Unfortunately my book deals mostly with 17th and
18th century Chepstow. I also have some of Bradney's a History of
Monmouthshire which I will have a look in later and let you know if there
is anything of interest.
