It makes me feel ill to think of the transcription/indexing errors -
I still
see the birthplace of Somerset listed as SOMALIA!! I wrote to Ancestry about
that one too. The 1891 England census has 10,091 people listed as being born
in such places as Wells, Bath and Glastonbury, Somalia. Wales has 1,402.
actually a big improvement over all with many more names indexed and
less errors.

makes me wonder about paying for such data (I have a full
subscription); I
would expect moderately accurate data.

Shrewsbury for some reason is showing up as being in Middlesex County
rather
than Shropshire in the 1901.

I am coming up to my third year with them now, and my conclusion is
that in fact
ancestry.com operates as a co-operative with a paid
staff and many thousands of volunteers maintaining RootsWeb for
example and developing FreeBMD and giving time at Family History
Centers world wide and SoG in London (but that is a registered charity
with paid staff)
Obviously money is made and running all those servers and investing
millions in "our" census - and hiring bright young graduates in
computer studies (see vacancies on Yahoo) all has to be paid for.
I am regualrly posting alternative names which become searchable every
time there are 500 new and an auto-update takes place
yesterday a friend browsing 1841 Gloucestershire off line
found a critical family group and emailed me that extraction.

Beware!!
The following revealing information was posted on the CLWYD list by
Ian Edwards.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------
91 people living in Wales are listed as being born on the island of
Montserrat in the West Indies. According to Ancestry they were born
in those well-known towns of Welshpool, Montserrat; Newtown,
Montserrat; Llanfyllin, Montserrat; Llanfair Caereinion, Montserrat;
...
143 are recorded as being born in the Balkan country of Montenegro.
Again, according to Ancestry they were born in those well-known towns
of Llangurig, Montenegro; Llandinam, Montenegro; Churchstoke,
Montenegro; Forden, Montenegro; ...
145 are recorded as being born in Finland. In Mold, Finland; Bagillt,
Finland; Holywell, Finland; ...
23 born in the West African country of Cameroon, yes, Llanrwst,
Cameroon; Dwygyfylechi, Cameroon; Dolwyddelan, Cameroon; ...
and lots of immigrants from Derbyshire. That is Llansantffraid,
Derbyshire, England; Llysfaen, Derbyshire, England; Cefn Mawr,
Derbyshire, England; Llangerniew, Derbyshire, England; ...
in fact many of the same errors which I reported when they released
the 1871 census >:o .
And it appears that in 1901 the entire population of Shropshire had
disappeared! Any searches for the county in the England 1901 census
produce no results :-( .
