Dear Alison,
The purse of gold are as Linda stated. The 'address', I believe, was in
the form of a documented scroll , documenting his history with the
company.
Worth a good bit and what a family heirloom if you can find it.
I will check out at Tredegar library the pits and levels at Tredegar on
the weekend. Ted Smart, the Tredegar historian constructed a map which
shows where all the Pits, Drifts, etc. It is housed in the Tredegar
Library upstairs where the Tredegar Community Archive Group meet.
Think when they constructed the Tredegar Bypass road, between Ashvale
and Heathfield Bridge they came across the old workings of Ash Tree Pit
roughly around the area where the Whitworth Pits were, side of the
Sirhowy.
Tredegar Comprehensive school lies roughly on the site of the Whitworth
drifts and pits and further South was Ty Trist Colliery. Will have to
check the 1875 map as I only have a 1915 one that plots where the coal
workings are and just show 'old mine workings'
Cannot find an Obit for Elizabeth Davies ('nee Mason), Brenda checked
over 6 weeks after her death. Also seems as if the Obit for David Davies
was the only reference to his death.
May be worth a trip on Saturday to the library as Ron Jenkins, curator
of the Museum at Tredegar Library (downstairs), is there from 10am
until 4pm. Ron was a personal friend of Oliver Jones who wrote the
history of Tredegar. May also be worth a look in Oliver Jones, Evan
Powell and Scarrett's history of Tredegar. I have the books, will see
what I find.
Best regards

My great-great grandfather, David DAVIES (c1824-1896), was an Overman
for
thirty years, at various pits owned by the Tredegar Company. These included
Whitworth, No. 8, Ash Tree, Bedwellty and Darren Level. According to his
obituary, when he retired in 1892, he was presented with "a purse of gold
and an address subscribed for by the workmen generally".
Can anyone tell me what the purse of gold and address are likely to have
been please? I am also keen to find out more about the Tredegar Company and
the pits where David Davies worked.
Thank you for your help.
