Yes
but I see absolutely no need to compete with the very capable Mike
John here and Ann Macey on Rootsweb so as soon as we got Mikes group
back on the rails monfh2 was renamed WELSH FAMILIES
Therefore monfh2 is today the email to a new broader group covering
South Wales and Gloucestershire north of the the river Severn
> Description
For genealogy and help with family history in South Wales, and even
Gloucestershire, from Pembrokeshire and with the tide all along the
Severn Channel, and up the Severn estuary and River Severn as far as
the Severn Bore rolls.
Brecon, Cardigan, Carmarthen, Glamorgan, Pembroke and Radnor with the
Forest of Dean side of Gloucestershire

The mining community of the Forest of Dean certainly has strong links
with Wales and I find Gloucestershire lasses married to Monmouthshire
lads in Raglan
There is a historical hierarchy of usenet genealogy groups
news:alt.genealogy
soc. (society)
Social issues, culture...
and the news:soc.genealogy.* groups
http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?lnk=gh&sel=33589646
most of which have rootsweb lists created in the days when users had
email but could not all get at nntp newsgroups
Since then google rescued the DejaNews archives which were offline for a year

>Google now offers a way to post messages on Usenet through Google
Groups. This eagerly-anticipated improvement follows the recent
addition of the full Usenet archive formerly maintained by
Deja.com.
Together, these upgrades provide you with complete access to Usenet
data since 1995 and the ability to add your own comments to the more
than 650 million messages already posted. We hope you will find this
improved Usenet service of value. Google is committed to making Google
Groups the best source of Usenet postings on the web and to that end,
we will continue working to add the services and functions our users
request.

next came the specialist boards and lists
for topics localities and surnames

Fifty yars ago Welsh genealogy had two main threads, the older
published genealogies were patriotic and historical, or of the mostly
english ruling or landowning classes.
Today the Family History Societies organised by county are the key to
the transcriptions and indexing.
