Hello Patti
1851 Census says Samuel WHITNUM, publican, was born in Monmouth the
county town of Monmouthshire... no mention of Caerleon which is well to
the south west. Perhaps he "lived" in Caerleon for a while. No sign of
any WHITNUM in Caerleon in 1841 but I'm wondering if this is a case of
misspelling/variation and that historically it may show up as WHITMAN
(sounds similar when said quickly, depending on your accent) or
WHITEMAN.
Happy hunting and good luck.

I'm new to this list and my main interest is in Caerleon. My
2nd great
grandfather was born there in 1825. His name was Samuel Whitnum. I found this
bit of information on the 1851 Census where he lived in Kidderminister, WOR with
his wife, Charlotte Biggs (b. 1827 Welsh Pool, Montgomeryshire d. 1876 Brooklyn,
NY) and my great grandfather William (b. 1849 Hoo Brook, WOR). According to
Samuel and Charlotte's marriage certificate, Samuel's father was also named
Samuel and was a tin man. I've visited the website and have seen the 2
manufacturing plants in the area at that time. I can't find the family in the
1841 Census but I was wondering if there were any records on the workers from
the factories?
Thanks in advance for any information,
