My great grandfather, John Rawlings (1823-1906) carved a cane describing
this 1890 tragedy. He lived at The British near Abersychan.

Subject: [Mon] PARFITT mine accident, poem 'Proud Sarah' (cross posting)
Hi Listers,
As those of us researching Somerset families in the Clutton area know,
many
Somerset-born folk went across the River Severn, during the 19th century,
to seek work in the coal mines of South Wales.
While looking on the net today, I came across a poem called 'Proud Sarah',
written by J, H. Smith, the great grandson of Alfred and Sarah PARFITT,
which concerns the explosion in the coal mine at Llanerch in
Monmouthshire,
which occurred on 6th. February 1890.

Alfred PARFITT was baptized at St. Augustine's Church, Clutton, Somerset
on
9th. April 1848. He was the brother of my husband's 2x great-grandfather,
William PARFITT.
The PARFITT family including Alfred and William's parents migrated from
Clutton to Abersychan in Monmouthshire in the 19th century.
Alfred PARFITT and his son, George, who hadn't reached his 13th birthday,
were killed in the explosion at Llanerch in 1890. One hundred and seventy
six men and boys were lost on that February day.
