Thank you all for your reply to my question about Theophilus Payne, and for
details of his children and wife . Yes Althea is right that was him in 1881
living with his parents and yes Robert Elon Payne was his brother and
they [William and Elon ]were born in Iron Acton Gloucester .Their mother Ann
Payne a widow remarried Thomas Williams in Clifton in 1852 And by 1856 when
my great grandfather James Williams was born they were living in Trevethin.
Theophilus Payne was my grandmothers cousin.
Liz

Dear Liz
He was living with son William (aet 7 ), daughter Emily (aet 5) and
brother-in-law William Holvey, as well as wife Alice.
Interestingly I see that Alice was born in Tunley, Somerset, a village I
know a little because my great-great aunt was invited to lay the foundation
stone of the Methodist chapel there and I still have the inscribed silver
trowel she was given at the time (1882).
The chapel was converted to a private house in 1970 but the foundation stone
she laid is still there!

If this IS him then it's interesting that his father was born in Iron Acton,
Gloucestershire, and the family had been living at the same address since
1871, when Dad was a coal miner and they were living next door to his
brother Elon. In 1861 both brothers and their respective wives were living
under the same roof in Broad Street.
Apparently the job of catcher was more popular than some others in an iron
mill - according to one definition I found they were men who formed the
molten iron into rails or ingots.

Another couple of questions for all you Aberystruth experts.
Just received a death certificate which tells me that John OWENS died by
accidental scalding from a steam engine in 1854 at the age of 75. The
informant was a Mr Brewer, coroner.
Do coroners' records exist for Aberystruth from this period?
I found a detailed report for another inquest elsewhere in a local
newspaper. I think the location of this accident was likely to be in the
eastern part of Ebbw Vale. What newspaper would have covered that area at
that time?

Evening all,
Is there anywhere where I can find a list of all chapels
churches and other places where a baby may have been christened/baptised in
Pontnewynydd around 1883?
Thank you and I hope everyone had a good holiday

This is a useful site.

St Luke's Pontnewynydd is listed there under Abersychan.
Ebenezer is an independent. Last time I looked in there a year or two ago
the bramble overgrowth was being cleared and the MI's were becoming
accessible after many years neglect. Anyone know how the work is
progressing?

Just noticed that you put Pontnewydd in the subject line, but Pontnewynydd
in the query.
I was referring to Pontnewynydd.

I would also like to here an update on the Ebenezer Chapel. I was there 3
years ago and it was almost all brambles. However the grave 2 relatives
buried near the back of the chapel was visible. I wonder how many other
relatives are buried there.

Re: Ebenezer, Chapel Street, Pontnewynydd.
Well Betsy, as you saw, there are a lot of graves there and a lot have
inscriptions.
When I first went there some years ago it was derelict, locked up, and
totally overgrown.
However, within the last few years it has been brought back into use, a
board put up with a new incumbent named, and a contact phone number which I
took down and have since lost.
There was obviously a concerted effort two (?) years ago to reclaim and
clean up the graveyard.
I wonder if someone in the area could pop up there, take down the contact
details and perhaps we can get some news. A project to list the MIs should
now be feasible and I would be prepared to go up there and help out for a
day or two as I know I have an interest in it.
Walt
