G'day Hugh
Thanks for your input and for the information about Edwin. One of my
major problems, particularly at this distance from Monmouthshire, is the
sheer unconnectedness of the Jones's and the Lewis's, particularly in
the Eastern Valleys. That's one of the reasons for my plea for help. The
commonality of the names is a true PITRE. (for Ann's benefit it's an
abbreviation for Pain In The Rear End).
I hadn't got the 1891 census information as an enumerator's image so
that adds a little more to the dossier. You have the same information
that I have for the 1851 and yes, I need his marriage certificate to
find his father's name and occupation. The FreeBMD marriage index gives
an Edwin Jones and Martha Davies as being married December quarter 1867
at Pontypool. I shall have to hope that it is them when I order the
certificate. My grandmother's birth certificate gives her mother's
maiden name but it is illegible on the copy that I have. On the 1901 he
is a railway goods guard, aged 52 and the reason I know it's him is that
my great-uncle Octavius is also at the same address. Would that all my
Jones family forbears had named all their children with such distinctive
given names. It would have made my research a little easier.
Once again, thanks for your help,
Ray

there is no such thing as "the" JONES family

99.999% are unrelated
Jones = son of John which is a popular name in all christian commuities
