Subj: [MON] May and Lilian Harrison 1890
Thanks to Mike and Brenda for clarifications re the twins origins
and Lilian’s
death.
I still do not know where May was in 1891 as she
doesn’t seem
to show on census records. Would she have been kept in the
Newport Orphanage do you think until her mother could take her? How do
I find the workhouse on the census? I have membership of Ancestry.
Also although the twins were illegitimate would there be any record of
the father? Would he have been required to contribute. I know with
Scottish ancestors the Church often took on a policing role, chastising
offenders but also very usefully getting the putative fathers to pay
some maintenance. Was there any such system in Wales? Again the
tradition says that the mother was seduced by the son of the house in
which she was a servant, but once it was known she was pregnant she was
thrown out on her ear. Would be nice to know if this was true and how
ever latterly to name and shame!!!!
Thanks for any suggestions,
Best
wishes,
Mary
