Albert HOCKEY,aged 25, of Crumlin, inside-half joined Keighly Rugby league,
he his one of the most experienced scrum halves in Monmouthshire. He
represented the county 9 times, captained Abertillery and Newbridge and played for
Pontypool, and was a member of joint Abertillery/Cross Keys who played Springboks.
Miss Celia GABE, of 61, Upper-Thomas-street, Merthyr, died on Sunday
Sept.22nd, aged 80 years. Miss GABE belonged to an old Merthyr Family. Her father the
late Mr. John GABE, carried on business in Merthyr as a builder. She was an
aunt of the late Dr. M. GABE, who also lived there for many years. Miss GABE was
a member of the Market-Square Congregational Church.
Funeral of Mr David LEWIS of Bettws, near Bridgend, for many years a member
of the old Bridgend and Cowbridge Board of Guardians, took place at Sardis
Baptist Chapel, on Saturday. Alderman the Rev. William SAUNDERS,J.P. and the Revs.
T. PARRY, A. MORGAN,(Bettws), and D. JONES, (Brenmenin), officiated.
Sunday September 22nd 1935. South Wales struck by Great Thunderstorm, with
hailstones size of golf balls. There were scenes of chaos at Chepstow and St.
Arvans.- one resident Mr. Claude SIMMONDS had lived in the village for 40 years
and seen nothing like it before. Groves Farm, occupied by Mr B. JEREMY,
suffered severely. One house lost 29 windows occupied by Mrs. M.E. JOHNSON.
Lightening struck the house of Mr.C.F. SIXSMITH, the Barry Surgeon, in Holton-road,
Barry, during bailing operations at his home in Coigne-Terrace, Barry, Robert
Samuel ALLEN,22, a transport worker struck his head against a banister of the
stairs and died from his injuries.
Six bridesmaids will attend Miss Betty WILLIAMS when she marries Mr. Jack
PETERSEN, the British Boxing Champion at Marshfield Parish, Monmouthshire on
October 9th at noon.- Miss Nan REES, Miss Doreen PETERSEN,(the bridegrooms
sister), miss Barbara WILLIAMS,(the brides sister), and Miss Jan FLOHIMONT will be
adult attendants, and the others will be little Yvonne COCHRANE and June
GRIFFITHS.
