My g grandfather Jonah COMLEY (aka Henry Beeche Comley) was born in
Pontypool in 1849, married Jane THOMAS in St John's Church, Maindee, in the
Parish of Christchurch, Newport, Mon. Most of their children, including my
grandfather, were born in Newport, and the family came to Porthcawl in the
mid 1880s where three more children were born. Jane died in 1923 and in
1927, at the age of 77, Jonah married the widow of William Henry JONES,
Constance Eliza WATERS, who was 56 years old, again in the Parish Church in
Christchurch. Jonah died in Porthcawl in 1932.
I have extensively researched my Comley ancestors but I would be pleased to
exchange information with any ancestors of my step g. grandmother's family.
Constance Eliza WATERS was born at Langstone Court Farm, Langstone, Mon.
dau. of
Joseph WATERS and Elizabeth DAVIES.
Joseph WATERS was born at Burnt House Farm, Nash, Mon. son of Joseph WATERS
and Elizabeth REESE both of Bishton, Mon.
Elizabeth WATERS (DAVIES) died in 1877 and Joseph, by this time he had taken
over Burnt House from his father, married Hester DUTFIELD, dau. of Edmund &
Sarah DUTFIELD of Castle Farm, Penhow, Mon. in 1886. There were children
from both of Joseph's marriages.
William Henry JONES, the first husband of Constance, was born in 1862 at St.
Brides Lodge, St Brides Netherwent, Mon., the son of Samuel Baker JONES &
Susan Anne. The family moved to Village Farm, Penhow and then to a farm in
Nash, possibly Moor Barn where the WATERS had formerly farmed. William Henry
JONES, who farmed both Little Common Farm and Great House Farm at Nash, died
in 1924. Samuel's brother was the Rev. Henry JONES, Curate of Caerwent, Mon.
in 1861.
As well as wishing to have contact with the descendants of these farming
families I would be pleased to have any information about the farms in the
Nash / Bishton and Langstone / Penhow district.
