May I assume you have had a look at
www.freebmd.org.uk and discovered the
birth registration for Davies Llewellin Pontypool 26 126 in December
quarter of 1839.?
If you do a search on DAVIES surname, forename Llew* you will find the
entry. Below the search results you will find how to order a certificate
online from GRO, if you follow the links. Varteg was in Trevethin parish in
Pontypool registration district.
Spellings were still quite variable in that time frame, especially for
working people who were less literate than the landowning classes.
It is found very commonly that surnames that were DAVIES in Wales became
DAVIS on migration to USA, as in many parts of Wales the surname DAVIES is
pronounced DAVIS.
The birth certificate should give mother's forename and maiden name. If you
know the names of any siblings you might then be able to locate their birth
certificates by specifying the same mother's name.
If you know the age of your Llew's parents from US censuses then you may be
able to look for a marriage in Trevethin parish records or nearby. Mike
John's web site
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/monprts.htm
has quite a lot of Trevethin records
No baptism for Llewellyn

My grandfather, Llewellyn Davis, may have been born in Varteg abt.
1839.
His father, also Llewellyn, was a coal miner. At one time, before
emigrating to the USA in 1850/51, the family lived in Merthyr Tydvil. My
hope is to document my grandfather's birth.
Also, I believe there is a publication on the village of Varteg. If so, I
would very much like to know how to go about purchasing a copy.
