Dear Michael
I was brought up in Llanhilleth and the Anglican church there is called St Mark's. I
would guess, if your great-grandparents lived in Hafodyrynys, it would have been easier to
walk down the long hill leading from Swffrydd to Llanhilleth rather than go to
Mynyddislwyn. If you go to a website called
www.valleysgirl.co.uk and look at the photo
albums of old Llanhilleth, you see there are some photos showing St Mark's (it's
at the bottom of the hill, with its bell-tower visible.) The church is still there today
and still in use.
Kind regards
Jane Dyer

This is the 'new' church on Spa Road, built in 1871.
Great feature as always John. I was fascinated to read about the
protests over forcing the congregation out of the old church, leading
to its restoration in 1894.
Say, in light of our recent discussions, I looked for St. Tudor's,
Mynyddislwyn, but it's not on your list. I put in a request for
Churches and Chapels of Monmouthshire on your Retrospective site, but
please consider this a request to add St. Tudor's if the opportunity
arises. (HINT to list members, John has been known to accept photos
from others if he has not photographed a particular site on his own.)
One more question for locals. My ggrandparents lived in Hafodyrynys.
I know they were married in "the established church" in Llanhilledd,
so I'm rather assuming they were Anglican. Any ideas what church
they'd be likely to have worshipped in? St. Tudor's, or is there
something closer to Hafodyrynys?
