G'day Roy
I was going through the threads to decide which to delete and came
across your query regarding Pen Y Val which Robert answered. I don't
want to re-open the thread so thought that I would answer off-list.
There is a way in which you can gain access to records of patients in
hospitals. If the patient was a family member, is deceased, and you are
the direct descendant of that person, you may be able to access the
admission and discharge details of the person but not the treatment
details. I was able to find that my great grandfather who was a patient
at the Bridgend Insane Asylum in Glamorgan and who died there in 1919
was buried in the attached cemetery. I knew his diagnosis from his death
certificate. The Glamorgan Records Office held the records and indicated
that it held other records which it did not specify.
My advice is to apply to the Gwent Record Office giving your details and
your descendancy from the person concerned and try. You could be
surprised.at the result.
Hope this helps

Hello Robert,
Thanks for the reply,it was what I was hoping for.......unfortunately, I
also know that there is a 100 yr closure on the details,so I will have to wait until 2015
to get them from Gwent Record Office!
Thanks again
Roy
