I suspect that it rather depended exactly where he lived at the time. The
church in Llanwenarth Citra is isolated amongst fields on the north side of
the river Usk, while most of the housing is in Govilon on the south side. A
ferry is shown on old-maps. Llanfoist Church is much closer to the housing,
and is on the south side of the river Usk. It also appears to be sheltered
from South-Westerly winds (the predominant rain-bearing winds in South
Wales) by the mass of the Blorenge mountain.
Maybe he was thinking about the mourners having to cross the river in an
open ferry-boat and trudge across soggy fields to the Churchyard to
Llanwenarth Citra church. Both villages are in the flattish plain of the Usk
SW and WSW of Abergavenny. The Usk valley is, like most South Wales valleys,
a U-shaped valley carved out by glaciers in past ice ages.
Use GENUKI and the links in the GENUKI parish pages to Old-Maps.co.uk ,
Google maps to find the places and Ordnance Survey maps online to see the
contours.
It's not an area that I know well, but I have a vivid recollection of a
Scout hike as a teenager in this area involving climbing the Sugar Loaf
mountain in rain and low cloud, so I can imagine his feelings.
However in 1851 he seems to have lived in Llangwm Uchaf (Langwmucha on the
census page), several miles south-east of Abergavenny, and to have been born
there, so maybe my guesswork is wrong.

Subject: [MON] Information on LLanfoist
My Great-Great Grandfather is buried in ST Peter’s Graveyard,
Llanwenarvth
Citra along with other family members. In a letter it was mentioned that
he said, “If it is a rainy day he wanted to be buried at Llanfoist” which
made me thing that there may be other family members buried there. If so
does anyone know where I should start looking? I am not familiar with the
area but plan to make the trip this summer in early August. Any Assistance
would be greatly appreciated.
