port labbert is probably port talbot....its a matter of dialect a west
country accent might sound like port labbert. the census enumerator
misunderstood because of accent or literally the enumerator being thick and
not local to the area. Ian

Hi Everyone,
My name is Ken Morgan, I live at 15 Allt-yr-yn Close in Newport and have
been a long time follower of The Mon. Digest. I'm frequently amazed at the
depth of knowledge found on the site.
Can anyone help me with a problem please.
I am researching my great grand parents and have hit the wall!
I have G.grandad fairly well. He is:
Thomas Tainty or Tanty (Depending on whether it's birth or death cert that
you are viewing) WILKINS
Born in Pen Kingstanley, Stroud Gloucs. on 29th. October 1852.
In the 1901 census he is living in CHEPSTOW where he remains until he dies
in Welby Place on 12 th. December 1932 aged 80 and being looked after by
his widowed daughter Clara E. Wright.
His wife was Mary Ann Wilkins. She died on 18th. February 1926 at 7
Orchard St. Chepstow. (?? Was Orchard Street the same place as Horse Lane
and did this become the present Church Road in Chepstow?) aged 69. This
would give her a birth date of 1856-1857. The 1901 census has her born in
Carmarthen in 1856 as does the 1911 census. On this 1911 census she is
born in PORT LABBERT. (I assume that this is in Carmarthenshire but I
cannot find any reference to it elsewhere) Can anyone confirm it as being
in Carmarthenshire?
On the birth certificate of their son Edwin Benjamin (b. 15th. Feb. 1886
and in Bute Tce., Cardiff) she is referred to as "Mary Ann Wilkins LATE
Lyshon or Leyshon, Formerly Nicholas".
I have tried every device in my limited book of experience but I cannot
find her birth, either of her marriages or a death cert for her first
husband.
I have only found one reasonable possibility (out of many!)for her 1st.
husband - Matthew Henry Leyshon b. 1856 Lower Llansamlett, Swansea. There
is a marriage here 1879 but, it has serious difficulties because, in the
1911 census Mary Ann Is married to Thomas Wilkins and they have a 10 yr.
old daughter. Did Mary Ann get Married, widowed, remarried and have a
child between 1879 and 1881?!
Even if this were the case, I can find no death for Matthew Henry Leyshon
and no Marriage to either Leyshon or Wilkins.
With the summer coming I foresee some enjoyable trips to Chepstow and West
Wales but in the meantime can anyone throw light on any of these problems
please?
A long note! Thank you for taking the time to read and thank you in
advance for any help that I may receive.
Ken
