Dear Listers,
I need you help.
As you may know, I've recently uploaded a series of webpages devoted to
Tredegar's churches and chapels as part of the 'Welsh Churches and Chapels
Collection' feature on my website.
One of the chapels is causing me problems because I can't find any
references to its history.
The chapel in question is in Georgetown, on the corner of James Street and
Woodfield Cross. It currently houses Georgetown Community Centre but it was
once a Primitive Methodist chapel. When did it cease being a chapel?
The building bears a foundation stone dated 1913, but a chapel first appears
on this site on an Ordnance Survey map published in 1901. This earlier
chapel must have been present when the OS surveyed the area circa 1899 or
even earlier.
There appears to have been a stone name and date plaque high above the main
entrance doorway - but the details have either been removed or have been
eroded away.
Does anyone know the history of this chapel - or a source of information
about its history?
I'd be very grateful for any help in researching the origins of the
chapel(s) on the James Street site and also of its decline and change of
use.
Kind regards,
John
