Hi sman61,
Just an fyi. I keep my tree in FTM and synch with my online tree, the opposite of you.
When I uploaded my tree to Ancestry, I noticed that my Source Notes did not upload to the
online tree. Since many of these come from family documents and are a large part of my
documentation, this is a problem.
Reading the Legacy Group Owners Forum, the importation of FTM ged files is not 100% which
I don't find surprising since the ged standards are fairly old and the software of
today has advanced. I was also noted that some information goes missing when
Ancestry.com
ged files are imported, again no surprise but I'm not concerned since FTM and Ancestry
don't correspond and I have the notes, for the time being, in FTM.
I plan to test Legacy to see what does go missing. I have no doubt the many of us who
don't use the online tree have a lot of work ahead and those who have their trees
centered in
Ancestry.com will be locked into paying for their
Ancestry.com subscription if
they want to access their tree(s). Ancestry has addressed some of these concerns, they say
they will look into working with other (Unnamed) software providers and will expand the
functionality of their online trees. I don't expect they will work with the other
software developers since they will be giving people the option to not keep up their
subscriptions. Ancestry has evolved into a large, profit oriented company which is much
different from the 1990's.
A mild rant here; has any one else noticed the number of trees on Ancestry that have been
abandoned? More recently, I've noticed more trees that the owners have not signed in
for over a month and do not respond to contact notes. I'm wondering if these are
people who have joined under the "free trial period" and the not subscribed?
The bottom line is that there are problems with the Gedcom standard & I don't feel
I should be held ransom to Ancestry for my tree and research. In fact, maybe the whole
reason for stopping FTM may be to force subscriptions.
You didn't say what software you are using for your pc based tree and if you've
checked it for errors. I'm sure there are many on the list who will be interested, as
I am.
Thanks for your reply,
Paul, Ohio, USA

Subject: Re: [MON] Demise of Family Tree Maker
I use ancestry online however I still have my full family tree database
stored on my pc. Ancestry provides the ability to store the whole tree on
any family tree program that accepts ged files. So I don't see the problem.
If I have missed something please tell me.
