Hello
Banalban,
Diane about Monmouth and Monmouthshire. I have ancestors listed at
both
locations but get confused which is which. Can you tell me if prior
to
Monmouth is/was the county town of Monmouthshire.
Confusingly,
Monmouthshire was sometimes referred to as simply, Monmouth. The
same
applies to many of the Shire counties.
1900 if there were border or
name changes as I have some
conflicting
IDK about border changes prior to
1974, but there may well have been
some. In 1974 there was a *massive*
restructuring of the counties of
England, Scotland and Wales. As a part of
that restructuring borders,
and some entire counties ceased to exist. Some of
them came back in
1996. I really don't know enough about the changes, but can
assure you
that Monmouthshire has *never* been in England, despite
what
FamilySearch used to believe.
As much as I prefer not to cite
Wikipedia, it's probably as good a place
as any to start researching
Monmouthshire's history.
information in my tree. Also do you know of any
members who
would like
to conduct research in either area?
Sadly no. I'm
too far away to make it practical. Mind you, I'm at
least a whole ocean closer
than you are. :-)
