Daniel MURPHY, licensee of the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Adam-street, Cardiff, appealed against
his conviction by the stipendiary magistrate of having sold intoxicating liquor on Sunday
January 13. Sir Ellis GRIFFITH, K.C. and Mr. Joshua DAVIES were for the appellant, and Mr.
Kirkhouse JENKINS appeared for the respondents-the Police. After hearing the evidence and
counsel on both sides, the Deputy-Recorder said he had no hesitation. The only evidence in
this case that stood the test was the evidence of the police, and he accepted it
absolutely. The appeal would, therefore be dismissed and the conviction upheld.
Sentence of three months' hard labour for stealing bicycles and two months for
stealing surgical instruments were passed on William John BROOKS,24. For his share in
connection with the theft of the surgical appliances Patrick FAHEY, 20, was sent to hard
labour for a month. Harry ADLER, 17, was sentenced to two months' hard labour for
complicity in the cycle thefts. The surgical instruments were stolen from a motor-car left
by Dr. H.G. GREAVES in Womanby-street.
An inquiry into the death of the unknown child found on the bank of the Ely River, at
Llandough Moors was held by the district coroner (Mr David REES) at Penarth on Saturday.
Archibald BROWN, Clive-street, Grangetown, said a piece of string was tied round the neck.
Dr. J.E.S.Shepherd JONES said death was due to asphyxiation. Whether caused by
strangulation or drowning he could not say. The inquiry was adjourned for a fortnight.
Mr. J.R. THOMAS, youngest son of Mr and Mrs William THOMAS, of Pontycymmer, has passed the
final examination of the Auctioneers' and Estate Agents' Institute of the United
Kingdom. Mr THOMAS, who is articled to Messrs. POWELL and POWELL, licensed valuers, rating
experts and auctioneers of Cardiff, passed the intermediate examination last year.
Mr John JONES, of Alltddu Cottage, near Tregaron, Cardigan, who died on March 29, left
estate of the gross value of £898, with net prsonalty £861. Probate of the will has been
granted to his nephew Richard ELLIS, of Terrace-road, Aberystwyth, provision dealer.
