I am not clear what census John is talking about. Could it be 1861? - yes
here it is RG9; Piece: 4005; Folio: 73; Page: 33 William senior is Agent in
Forge and the boys are in the iron industry - Thomas a rollerman, John
'Heater in Forge', William 'Rawler in Forge',Elias and David 'Labourer
in
Forge', the youngest two 'scholars'. Address is in Ebbw Vale and is hard to
read - something like 'Briry Hill' number 157
In 1851 census at 187 Saddlers Row in Ebbw Vale, Bedwellty, in the Tredegar
census district were
William LEWIS Head Mar 44 Stock taker, b Brecon,Trecastle
Ann LEWIS Wife Mar 40 b Glamorgan,Merthyr
Thomas LEWIS son unm 15 Labourer b Glamorgan Merthyr
John LEWIS son unm 13 Iron straightning b Glamorgan Merthyr
William LEWIS son unm 11 Rail labourer b Glamorgan Merthyr
Elias LEWIS son unm 8 Scholar b Monmouthshire Bedwellty
David LEWIS son unm 6 Scholar b Monmouthshire Bedwellty
Methusalem LEWIS son unm 3 at home b Monmouthshire Bedwellty
Benjamin LEWIS son unm 1 at home b Monmouthshire Bedwellty
Thomas REES cousin widowed 22 Striking for Smith b Glamorgan Ystradgnlas
[Ystradgynlais]
The reference is HO107; Piece: 2448; Folio: 698; Page: 26
Note that in several ways this does not square with information you gave in
your original query.
1. William David Lewis b 1840 in Narberth Pembrokeshire
2. William David Lewis farmer, coal miner
What occupation is given for William David and his father on the 1866
marriage certificate? It seems unlikely someone starting in Ebbw Vale
Ironworks with a father in a responsible job in that works would move to New
Tredegar in a different valley and become a coal miner.
I suspect William may still have been in the Pembrokeshire coalfield in 1861
in the area south of Narberth possibly Martletwy where a William Lewis 21
was an agricultural labourer with widowed mother Jane, next door to a John
Lewis 25 coal miner and his wife. A lot of migration from the Pembrokeshire
coalfield to the mining valleys of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire occurred
later in 19th century. IF he was from Narberth - which presumably you have
sourced from somewhere such as an obituary or family document.
See
http://www.genuki.org.uk:8080/big/wal/PEM/Martletwy/ about this village
in the hundred of Narberth. It contained the Garden Pit at Landshipping
where 40 miners were drowned in 1844. Old-maps.co.uk shows a Landshipping
Colliery and a Westmeadow colliery in a 1891map.

my guess is his parents are thomas and catherine, but the only way to find
out is to get the marriage cert to get his father's name. i checked the
1861
census and the 1851, in the earlier, there are 2 options but i cant find
the
other option later on(1861) so i chose thomas and catherine but i could
still be wrong, did he marry Eliza A Greenhouse?

William David Lewis was born 10 Jun 1840
and was married 14 Apr 1866 in New Tredegar, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire to
Mary Bowen. He immigrated about 1870 with family. Only hope of going
back any farther on the Lewis line is to locate him on a census with his
parents, I think.
