Maurice Edward BATEMAN 25, single, a lighter-up at Maesglas G.W.R. engine sheds, Newport,
has been missing from his lodgings, 27, Somerton-road, Newport, since five p.m. on June
16, When he left his lodgings he did not say where he was going or that he was not
returning.
The marriage was celebrated at All Saints Church, Penarth, on Tuesday, of Major John
Horatious PARKHURST, of Penarth, to Miss Nelly EVANS, daughter of Mr and Mrs. W.J.
EVANS,4, Barron-road, Penarth. The bride was attended by her sister. Miss Gwen EVANS. The
best man was Lieutenant-commander LOUGHER.
It was reported at Tuesday's meeting of the Merthyr Corporation that the date of the
formal opening of Gwaunfarren Baths (presented to the town by Mr. H. Seymour BERRY, J.P.,
of Buckland) had been changed from July 5th to July 3rd. Mr. J.R. PRICE (Merthyr) was
appointed baths manager, with Mr. R.H. DAVID (Penydarren) as assistant manager, while Miss
Kate CAREY (Penydarren) was chosen as female attendant.
"I am satisfied that this woman is becoming a practised and confirmed thief,"
said the Merthyr Stipendiary(Mr.R.A. GRIFFITH) on Tuesday in sentencing Lilian PHILLIPS, a
Port Talbot steelworker's wife, to two months' imprisonment in the second
division.
Defendant was charged with stealing a wedding ring, valued at £3.5s., from Mr. FLOOK'S
jewellery establishment, in High-street, Merthyr, and in obtaining by false pretences two
metal handbags worth £1 from Mr. Harris HAMILTON'S shop in Horse-street, Dowlais. Mr.
B. HAMILTON, Merthyr, prosecuted, and Mr. W.A. CANTON, Dowlais, defended.
Joseph Morris 40, bookmaker Abertridwr, at Caerphilly Police-court on Tuesday, pleaded
guilty to three charges of drunkeness.
Inspector JONES said that the defendant had been "on the booze" for three
weeks.
Superintendent GRIFFITHS proved fifteen previous convictions, and defendant was sent to
prison for fourteen days on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently.
