May I give a public Thank You to John who has, at my request, been looking out for some
time for me for this mention of my grandfather Herbert Cornfield. Family history said he
"sang like an angel when he won the Pontypool eisteddfod" but I'd never been
able to find the evidence as I'd been looking at entirely the wrong year. Again, a
huge Thank You, John.

The eisteddfod under the auspices of the Pontypool Silver Band and the Pontypool
Ambulance Brigade was held in the Market-hall, Pontypool, on Tuesday.
Chief results:-

CONTRALTO (open): Madame Grove MORGAN, Cwmbran.
TENOR (open): Herbert CORNFIELD, Pontnewynydd.
BARITONE (open): Harold HALE, Aberbeeg.
VIOLIN (open): Master H.C. BELLRINGER, Caerleon.
JUVENILE CHOIR: 1st. Mountain Ash. (Mr. W. BADHAM).
2nd. Garndiffaith. (Mr. J. MATTHEWS).

Only evidence of identification was given at the opening at Pontypool on Tuesday, by Mr.
W. Pitt LEWIS (Deputy Coroner) on the inquest on Wm. Thomas JONES (58), collier, of
Tranch, Pontypool.
George WALKER, who is accused of the manslaughter of JONES, was present.
William Thomas JONES, son of the dead man, said his father was employed at the Tirpentwys
Colliery, and had always enjoyed good health. Witness last saw him alive on Saturday
evening, when he said he was going to pay his club money, at the Labour in Vain Inn. When
witness returned home at midnight he found his father dead in the house.
The inquiry was adjourned until Thursday, the 22nd inst.
Anthony Christian NEILSON 59, a storekeeper, employed by Messrs., R.E. JONES and Co., was
found dead in bed at his home 27, Hewson-stret, Mount Pleasant, Swansea.
A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned by the coroner (Mr.S.H.
STOCKWOOD). at the inquest on Tuesday at Blaengarw on William Thomas YOUNG, aged 24, an
underground machine man, who was killed at Glenavon Colliery on Friday by a fall of stone.
Mr. W.J. OWEN (H.M. Inspector of Mines),Mr. W. DRYBURGH (Agent of the colliery), Mr. Peter
SQUIRES (representing the Miners Federation), and Mr. H. LEWIS (for the company), were
present.
It was stated that YOUNG was in charge of a party which was removing an engine, and
before starting operations the roof was thoroughly examined, and sounded true. Another
examination was made later. and still appeared to be quite safe, but while YOUNG was
holding a corner of the engine, a large stone fell on him and killed him instantly
