Cardiff Castle.
Apropos the interesting discovery made during the course of excavations at Cardiff Castle,
which was announced in the Western Mail on Friday, an old resident of Cardiff in the
person of Mr. M. JONES, Cowbridge-road, informs us of a curious find in the vicinity
during the fifties which may have some relation to the ancient works recently unearthed.
The masonry of another Roman bastion has been laid bare, immediately abutting the
foundations of the Black Tower, and it appears to have originally extended eastwards
across the site of the present gateway.
Mr. JONES is the son of the late Mr. Noah JONES, and the nephew of the late Alderman
Daniel JONES and the late Alderman David JONES - both former Mayors of Cardiff-whose firm
constructed the main drainage of the city in the fifties. When work was started from a
point near the old Cardiff Arms (now the Angel Hotel), and proceeded across the road at
the top of High-street, a subterranean passage formed of stone walls arched over was cut
through and exposed to view. It was about ten feet below the surface of the street, and
many people thought it was an ancient outlet from the castle. The passage was at the time
closed on the castle side by a stone wall.
