The prizes were distributed at the college by Mrs GOWER, of Pontypool. The Principal, Mr.
Ivor B. JOHN, M.A., was in the chair. Musical items were rendered by the St. Julian's
Conservative and Unionist Club Orchestra.
The opening of the new cricket ground at Ynysyngharad Park, Pontypridd, took place on
Saturday. It was performed by Councillor W.J. DAVIES, J.P., M.E. (chairman of the
Pontypridd Urban District Council). Magnificient work had been carried out on the ground
under difficulties by the surveyor (Mr. LOWE), and his able deputy (Mr. HAUGH). Mr. Bert
HUGHES (captain of the Pontypridd cricket club) responded.
Johnny HAYDN, the Welsh flyweight champion, fought a very hard bout with Elkie CLARK
(Glasgow), the British champion, at Premierland on Sunday, but he could not withstand the
punishing blows to the jaw which CLARK landed so frequently, and in the ninth round,
simultaneous with the referee stopping the bout, HAYDN'S second threw in the towel.
Before a fair attendance at the Llynypia Baths on Saturday night Billy MOORE, the Welsh
light-weight champion, completely outclassed Kid JACKSON (Carmarthen) over fifteen
three-minute rounds. The full distance was covered, though each round was in favour of
MOORE. JACKSON displayed plenty of grit and stamina, and mainly as the result of his
adopting a very effective crouch and cover was able to avoid a knock-out.
In a scheduled six-round affair Wyndham BLAKE (Penygraig) so severly punished Austin JAMES
(Skewen) in the first minute of the meeting that the referee ( Mr. Charlie THOMAS, Caerau)
very wisely immediately stopped the fight in his favour.
Alby BROOKS (Pontypridd) and Billy OWEN (Penygraig) figured in a six-round , BROOKS
generally displayed a marked superiority, and in the fourth session he sent OWEN to the
boards with a right-hand chop. OWEN recovered and rested on one knee, but he failed to get
up in time and was counted out.
Johnny MARTIN (Penygraig) secured a verdict on points over Tom WILLIAMS (Cwmparc) in a
six-rounder.
