The body of David REES, 47, a bachelor, who resided at 20, Lower Cross-road, Rhymney, was
found in the Brynmelyn Pond, Rhymney.
It appears that REES returned home on Saturday evening and later went out without his coat
and cap. Inquiries were made and after some searching his body was found in the pond.
REES had been treated in hospital for some time for fractured ribs. He left the hospital
about a fortnight ago and returned to work at the Ogilvie Colliery.
After seeing her four children safely into a bus at Porthcawl on Monday Mrs. HIRST, of
Suffolk-place, Bridgend, fell back and collapsed. She died before medical aid could be
summoned.
An elderly man, named David WILLIAMS, of 24, Margaret-street, Pontygwaith, stumbled whilst
crossing a railway bridge at Ferndale on Monday night, and was killed outright as the
result of his head coming into contact with some iron fencing.
WELSH WEDDINGS.
Unusual interest was taken in the marriage at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church,
Cardiff, on Monday of Mr. George E. HARPER, only son of Mr and Mrs Thomas HARPER, of
Cardiff, and Miss Delphine P. THOMAS, eldest daughter of Lieut.-commander Vivian THOMAS,
R.N.V.R., and Mrs THOMAS, Cardiff.
The bride, who was attired in a satin beaute frock with old Honiton lace veil, was
attended by Miss Kathleen HARPER (bridemaid) and Master R. SPATHAKY (page). Mr. Tom WHITE,
of Newport was the best man.
The Rev. Father A.H. BARNETT and the Rev. Father BYRNE conducted the service.
After the ceremony a naval guard of honour was formed outside the church, in command of
Mr. F. SIMPSON, chief yeoman of signals for many years on the Royal yacht.
Following a reception at the Pavillion Cafe, Mr and Mrs HARPER, left for London and the
South Coast.
Mr. Ieuan J. JONES, headmaster of Parkylan Council school, and son of Mr and Mrs Daniel
JONES, The Shop, Llangeler, was married at Llangeler Parish Church to Miss Jane BOWEN,
eldest daughter of the late Mr Edward BOWEN and of Mrs JAMES, of Blaendyffryn Farm, Capel
Evan. The bride was given away by her step-father, Mr. S. JAMES, and the bridemaids were
Miss Megan BOWEN (sister) and Miss Bessie JONES (sister of the bridegroom). The best man
was Mr. D.J. JONES, Llandyssul (brother of the bridegroom). The Rev. J. DAVIES (Vicar)
officiated. The honeymoon is being spent at Aberystwyth.
The marriage was solemnised at Caerleon Parish Church on Monday of Mr. Robert WITCHELL,
only son of Mr and Mrs H. WITCHELL, Blaenavon, to Miss Lilian E. NASH, only daughter of
the late Mr. J.G. NASH, and Mrs L.E. NASH, Museum-street, Caerleon. The Rev. Frederick
W.G. WHITFIELD, vicar of the parish, conducted the ceremony.
The bride wore a dress of ivory satin trimmed with ninnon and pearls, with veil of
Nottingham lace and orange blossoms, and carried a bouquet of white carnations with
pendant of "lucky horseshoes" attached. The bridemaids were Miss Ethel KING
(friend) and the Misses Vera KEELAN and Phyllis ANDREWS (cousins), Birmingham.
Police-constable MORRIS and Mr. Albert OWEN, of Ystalyfera, two Welsh Rugby international
players, have been presented with travelling suit cases in recognition of their being
selected to represent Wales in international matches and for their services to the local
club.
Mr. Billy GOVER, outside left of the Llanhilleth Association Football Club, and a member
of the Conservative Club Male Voice Choir, who left the district on Monday for
Southampton, where he will embark for the United States, was presented with a wallet of
Treasury notes by his old club and choir colleagues and others.
