Also, I understand, that if they weren't married the father would have to be
present to have the child registered in his name. If he was at sea she would
have had to register the baby under her name and then perhaps had it
corrected when he came back from sea.

The birth registration going by the dates you mention was done in the six
weeks and was registered in the correct quarter, what some are not aware of
is that birth registration could be done up to a year after the birth of a
child, this was not made public because many would forget?to register
births. There was no child benefit back then?as there is today so the six
week timescale continued and works in favour?for parents who place a claim
for child benefit.
