At the Oval Pavilion, Tonypandy on Friday Nobby BAKER (Trealaw) defeated Dan
O'CONNOR (Pontypridd) in the chief contest by a narrow margin of points. In the
minor bout Alf ROSE (Williamstown) and Donald JONES (Tonypandy) fought a draw.
Called upon to concede half a stone in weight to Tommy JOHN (Gelli) in the main
event of ten rounds at the Square Pavilion, Tonypandy, on Friday, Llew HAYDN
(Clydach Vale) just failed in his effort, and JOHN was adjudged a narrow winner
on points. It was a fine contest.
In the minor bouts Charlie DICKMAN (Tonypandy) defeated Jack CURTIS (Clydach
Vale), while Phineas JOHN (Gelli) gained a "double" for his boxing family by
accuring the verdict over Fred MORGAN (Gilfach Goch).
The sixth of the series of boxing tournaments organised by the Port Talbot
Canteen Committee was held at the New Theatre on Friday. A six-round between Day
WILLIAMS (Taibach) and Young KELLIER (Aberavon) ended in a victory for WILLIAMS,
KELLIER being knocked out in the second-round, although it was the force with
which his head struck the boards rather than the blow which rendered him
hors-de-combat.
A fifteen-round contest between Rich LANDEG (Aberavon) and Con McCARTHY
(Pontypridd) started tamely, both men showing a tendency to clinch. From the
fourth round LANDEG scored freely with a clever left and had his opponent in
difficulties in the ninth round. McCARTHY boxed gamely, but gave little in
return for the punishment he received at the hands of LANDEG, who was declared
the winner on points. A fifteen-round bout between Young Freddy WELSH
(Pontypridd) and Kid SHEPHERD (Mardy) ended in a draw.
Three contests were staged at Merthyr Drill-hall on Friday in aid of the local
miners' kitchen fund. Though handicapped by a troublesome left knee, injured at
football a few days previously. Billy DELAHAY (Dowlais) put up a strong fight
against Jack THOMAS (Cefn Coed), and generally showed himself the craftier
boxer. The bout, which went the full distance of fifteen rounds, ended in a
verdict for DELAHAY.
A fifteen-round contest between Charles CHEW (Aberdare) and Young HYNES
(Merthyr) resulted in a draw. Matched against Young DANDO (Merthyr) for ten
rounds, Young DUNNICLIFFE (Dowlais) had the misfortune to dislocate his thumb,
which compelled him to retire in the sixth round.
