It looks like Lewis Street was one of the streets that disappeared when the
new road system was pushed through. What is called the "Southern
Distributor" Road now cuts a dual carriageway swathe between the Transporter
Bridge and the rest of Pill.
All in the name of progress, of course.

Thank you Ann for your very helpful suggestions. I will contact Newport
Library.
I remember visiting my Nan when she lived in Lewis Street at the end of the
1950s and being fascinated by the Transporter Bridge which could be seen
from the end of the road.
Is Lewis Street still there?

My mother attended Bolt Street School in the late 1920s early 1930s
You should try Newport Library as they have a huge collection of
photographs. They were digitising them at one stage but I think they only
did about 2000 or so.
After leaving school she went to work at Lovell's Factory - please could
anyone tell me whereabouts in Newport the factory was. She lived in Lewis
Street at the time so I wonder whether it was near there.
The Lovell's factory was in Crindau - Albany Street - just off Malpas
Road.
In the area that is still known to older residents as "The Piggery" A new
Sainsbury's store has been built near to the lovells site. It opened a few
months ago, just in time for the Ryder Cup.
Lewis Street is "down Pill" and the other end of town. It would be just
one
bus ride away though and only take about 15 minutes in those days
