As the result of a dance orgasnised by Mrs. Ifor GRIFFIN, of Rumney Court, and the ladies
of Rumney, and held at the Rumney War Memorial-hall on April 22. (£34 18s.) has been
handed over to Mrs. Charles BIRD, president of the Linen Guild of the Cardiff Royal
Infirmary.
Blodwen WATT, of Trealaw, was charged at Neath County Police-court on Wednesday with
bigamously marrying Richard JONES, a refreshment house-keeper, of Neath Abbey. JONES was
charged with aiding and abetting. Mr. W.A. LEYSON defended.
George WATT, labourer, Trealaw, spoke to marrying the woman defendant at Aberbargoed in
August 1913. In 1915 he went to France and in 1918, when he came home, found his wife
living with the defendant, JONES, by whom she had a child. They were reconciled, but the
woman went again to live with JONES at Taff's Well. Now he and his wife were living
together at Trealaw.
In reply to Mr. LEYSON, witness said he married his wife when she was 13. He was seventeen
then.
Gwennllian McCARTHY, a sister of the woman spoke to witnessing the marriage ceremony with
JONES in December, 1917. Her sister gave her the impression that George WATT had been
killed in the war.
Police-constable COOPER, Neath Abbey, said JONES admiitted that he had married WATT. He
knew she was married, adding: "I have been living in fear of this for nine years. I
got her in trouble. I did not realise the seriousness of it."
When arrested, Mrs. WATT told him: "I don't wish to say anything."
The two defendants were committed to the assizes both pleading not guilty.
William DUNKLEY 32, who has made several appearances before the Cardiff magistrates
charged with conduct intended to insult females in Three Horse Shoes-lane and St.
Fagan's-road. Fairwater, was sentenced on Wednesday, to three months' hard labour.
An alibi was pleaded without avail.
On the instructions of Mr. Charles E. CLEEVES. J.P., who is leaving the district, Messrs.
J.M. LEEDER and Son, Swansea, offered for sale at the Hotel Metropole, Swansea, on
Wednesday the freehold residence known as Heddfan, Sketty, Swansea.
The property is situated in grounds of a little over two acres in extent and includes
garage, and outbuildings, tennis court, bowling green, &c. The lot was sold to Mr.
D.J. SNELL, Swansea, for £6,850.
The solicitor was Mr. William JONES, Exchange-buildings, Swansea.
At their salerooms in Bridge-street, Newport, on Wednesday evening Messrs. SCOTT and BLOCK
and WEBBS disposed of No 106, Christchurch-road, Maindee, to Mr. CHRISTOPHER for £200. The
property is held for 999 years from 1887 at an annual ground rent o £1.10s.
Major Edgar W. JONES, M.A., O.B.E., the headmaster of Barry County School, informed the
board of governors on Wednesday that two out of five open scholarships had again been
secured by Barry County School scholars -Leslie B. BROOKS gaining the Isaac ROBERTS
Scholarship, and Francis B. GIBBS the Drapers' Company Scholarship. During the past
five years scholars of Barry County School had gained no less than 23 university open
scholarships a record unexampled in the whole of Wales.
Three young fellows from Pendarren, Merthyr, were committed for trial at the county
quarter sessions by the Brecon magistrates on Wednesday on a charge of breaking into the
warehouse of Messrs. BROOKES Brtos., motor and cycle dealers, and stealing a number of
lamps and other accessories to the value of £5. Their names were Trevor REES 21, collier;
Ephraim STEPHENS 20, collier's helper, and Edward Charles THOMAS 19, steel worker.
