A Newport sale of Work.- Mr. Reginald CLARRY, M.P. for Newport, opened a sale of work in
connection with St. Andrew Parish Church, Newport. The above group was taken at the

BRECON EISTEDDFOD.
The winner of this years' bardic chair was Mr. Edgar PHILLIPS of Pengam who submitted
a poem on "The Fair Heavens."
The chairing ceremony was performed by Sarnicol, and congratulatory speeches in Welsh were
delivered by a dozen or so assistants.
The other chief awards were:-
Contralto solo; Madame Lizzie DAVIES, Tonypandy.
Open recitation: Mrs. Gwen VAUGHAN, Llandebie.
Essay: Miss D.W. DAVIES, Sketty, Swansea.
Violin solo; Madamoiselle VOUGOIS, Brecon (late of Paris).
Short Story: Miss Mabel WALTON, Trallong, Brecon.
Soprano solo; Madame Curtiss MORGAN, Pontypool.
Sonnet ("Life's Autumn Tide"): Mr. G.T. JONES (Madog Fychan), Brecon.
Children's Choir ("Spring Song." Dr. T. Hopkin EVANS): Ynysgau (Merthyr
Juvenile Choir (conductor, Mr. E. LUMLEY). Two Choirs competed.
Mixed choir (confined to Brecon and Radnor), "The Lord is my Shepherd" (G.A.
MacLAREN): Honddu Glee Singers, Brecon (conductor, Mr. J.H. JONES).
Lyric: Mr. E.V. OWEN, Abergavenny.
Tenor solo: Mr. Evan EVANS, Brecon.
Englyn: Mr. W.G. THOMAS, Seven Sisters.
Bass or Baritone solo: Mr. Brinley LLEWELLYN, Port Talbot.
Champion solo (any voice and any selection): Madame Lizzie DAVIES, Tonypandy.
Mixed choral competition, "Hymn to Music" (Dulay Buck): Brecon Choral Society
(conductor, Mr. Rhys JONES). The choir returned £20 of the prize to the eisteddfod
committee.
The choirs entered for the male voice competition, "The Crusaders" (Mr. Dan
PROTHERO), prize £30, and the marks gained were:- Celtic, Beaufort (Mr. Randall WILLIAMS),
90; Uskside, Brecon (Mr. Harvey PRICE), 78; Upper Cwmbran United (Mr. J. WILLIAMS), 78;
Glanffrwd (Mr. W.L. LEWIS), 87; Llanwrtyd (Mr. J. THOMAS), 88; Cymmer, Porth, 80; Rhayader
(Mr. Kinsey MORGAN), 85; High-street, Merthyr (Mr. Ben DAVIES), 93.
Considerable excitement prevailed following the announcement that the Merthyr choir were
the winners, and the successful conductor was carried shoulder high through the town.
