Hi Jon,
I have several lines of my family in Brynmawr from 1851 onwards, (KNOWLES,
McCARTHY & WILLIAMS). In fact, I have a cousin who still lives there and I
was in Brynmawr two weeks ago, so if you would like some photos, I'll see
what I have.
I think Jane is right that not all of Brynmawr exists for 1861; the same is
true of large parts of Mon. I found that my family moved around Brynmawr
quite a bit over the years. My guess is that finding somewhere they could
afford that gave them the space needed for their growing families was very
difficult. Much of the housing was very poor, with one room downstairs and
one upstairs not uncommon. I read a report in an old newspaper, from
1890's, of several married couples having to share bedrooms, "without so
much as a curtain between the beds".

Hello Jon
I have a strange feeling - unsubstantiated, but others who know better will
no doubt confirm - that there were some parts of the 1861 census which were
not transcribed - lost, destroyed, whatever. So it may be you won't be able
to find your Bailey Street folks. I hope you do though.
Jane.

Hi Barbara,
Specifically the THOMAS family, father William, mother Mary, ages would be
approx 41 and 36 respectively. The family are at Bailey street in the
Censuses either side in 1851 and 1871.
Many thanks,
Jon
