McEWEN - WILLIAMS.
Mr. Leonard Victor McEWEN, son of Mr. A. C. McEWEN, of Seven Kings, Essex, was married at
St. Mary's Church, Monmouth, to Miss Anita Helena Dorey WILLIAMS, daughter of Mrs.
Annie Elizabeth Dorey WILLIAMS, 53, Monnow-street, Monmouth, and of the late Mr. John
Edward Dorey WILLIAMS, of Pontnewydd. The Rev. A. E. MONAHAN (vicar of Monmouth)
officiated. The bride, who wore a dress of ivory georgette, trimmed with crystals and
pearls, was attended by Miss Phyllis TUCKER, of Pontnewydd, and her two little cousins,
Myfanwy JONES, Monmouth, and Hilda MORGAN, Cheltenham. Mr. G. C. McEWEN, brother of the
bridegroom, acted as best man. A reception was held at the Beaufort Arms Hotel, Monmouth.
Mr. and Mrs. McEWEN left subsequently for Eastbourne.
A broken screw forming part of a crane attachment was examined by the Cardiff coroner (Dr.
R. J. SMITH) and Mr. George LYONS (H.M. Inspector of Factories) at an inquest on Tuesday
on William COCK 63, a dock labourer, living at 3, Aberystwyth-street, The Moors, Splott,
who was killed whilst following his employment in No. 4 hold of the steamship Galtymore,
lying in the King's Wharf, Queen Alexandra Docks, Cardiff, about noon on Saturday. Mr.
W. H. ROONEY represented the Transport and General Workers Union.
Evidence given by Daniel FERRIERS, a Great Western Railway crane driver, showed that a
full tub of coal had been raised out of the hold high enough to allow it to be swung
ashore, when the adjustment screw of the brake broke, causing the tub to fall back into
the hold.
Thomas CLIFFORD. a dock labourer, said the tub fell on its side, and struck COCK on the
head, knocking him down.
Christopher ?. T. BILLINGHAM, Great Western Railway dock mechanical engineer, said it was
almost impossible to explain the cause of the fracture.
"There must have been some fault in the metal," he said, " but it is
difficult to get uniform quality. The weight lifted on this particular occaision was
probably not more than one-fifth of the maximum load for which the crane was
designed."
In reply to Mr. W. H. ROONEY, witness said he was prepared to investigate the possibility
of a safety design.
The medical evidence showed that the cause of death was the fracture of the spine, and the
coroner gave a verdict accordingly.
