Dear Sylvia,
I'm afraid Hermon Baptist Chapel was demolished in 1987, and a medical
centre was erected on the same site. The wall of the medical centre bears a
commemorative plaque on which is written:
ON THIS SITE STOOD
HERMON BAPTIST CHURCH
1820 - 1987
When I visited the site in September 1998, the chapel burial yard was still
there, although heavily overgrown, located behind the medical centre. Town
councillor John Mason told me (in 1998) that the council was trying to get
permission to 'landscape' the graveyard, but this would involve
repositioning the gravestones. He said they were having difficulty because
all the known relatives and descendants had to be contacted to give their
permission, and ". . .many have gone to America".
I do not know whether the council's plan was ever implemented.
Kind regards,
John
